Shimmies have always been a favorite belly dance movement to do because they’re just FUN to do!  When you shimmy you feel both invigorated and relaxed.  Think of it as shaking the stress right out of your body.keep calm


One of the most important keys to a good shimmy is to focus on staying relaxed.  It’s a great feedback system because if you get tense and the muscles get tight then the shimmy sputters and stops.  Have you ever been doing a shimmy and it suddenly freeze on you?  This happens because the muscles get tight.  When this happens just relax the muscles and start again slowly and build up gradually as you get a rhythm going.  Your body will tell you through your shimmy that you need to loosen up!  (By the way, a great class at The Belly Dance Studio to get your shimmy on is Belly Dance 101 Wednesdays at 10 am or 6:30 pm. . .check it out HERE).


Shimmies are a great way to reduce stress because they teach your body to relax.  The vibrational movements will literally shake stress and tension out of your body.  The next time you come home from work after a long stressful day, try shimmying for five minutes and see if it doesn’t make you feel better immediately!
